About 2 weeks ago I posted my first review on Blue Apron’s Meal Delivery Service, so I thought it was time to recap the second meal from our delivery. Up on the menu was Arepas de Carne Molida and I was definitely excited about this one! Anything remotely Spanish/South American and I’m in. I’ve never met a bowl of chips & guac that I didn’t like and I’ve been wanting to try Arepas after PALEOMG raved about them out. After pulling out all of the ingredients and studying the recipe, I knew mine would not turn out as pretty as the ones in the picture, but nonetheless I was looking forward to the final product.

After washing and prepping all of the ingredients, I pickled the jalapenos (skipping the disgusting red onion, once again!) and put them off to the side. I then browned the beef on the skillet while I formed the arepas from the masarepa powder. I veered off the instructions a bit and just threw the seasonings directly into the skillet instead of on their own to save time and dirtying any more pans. Once the meat was ready I set it aside and fried the arepas (in coconut oil versus their suggested olive oil)…and let me just tell you, they did NOT stay together like the picture. They were a MESS. {Lesson learned–going forward I’ll need to use more water than they said to.} After everything was ready I piled the beef, radishes, avocado, and pickled jalapenos onto the arepa and squeezed the remaining lime over each one.

Final verdict: 7/10.  While this entree choice was much more our style, I felt the overall meal lacked strong flavor. Without the avocado or the pickled jalapenos, these would have been sub-par at best. Once again the amount of time it took to prep and cook just seemed more than really necessary for a weeknight dinner, and the amount of dirty dishes & mess it created wasn’t ideal in our less-than-huge kitchen. Also, after two different dinners, I’ve decided that there is no need to cook EVERYTHING in oil like they say. It’s messy and you can save a bunch of calories by eliminating it. The next entree up is Chicken Piccata so keep an eye out for the 3rd, and final, review!!!
