Workout Wednesday: 5 Most Asked Questions

I figured it was about time for another Workout Wednesday post! Today I’m answering my 5 most asked questions. Whether it’s Instagram DMs, comments on photos, texts or in person, the same 5 questions resurface. Almost daily actually. Sometimes the influx of DMs can be a bit daunting to get back to, so hopefully having a post to reference back to will help all of us! Without any further adieu, here we go:

Workout Wednesday: 5 Most Asked Questions

Question 1 How did you get into running?

Long story short, I needed a mental relief from fertility and hormone struggles. I started between 2 minutes of jogging and 2 minutes of walking for 20 minutes and it grew from there. I decided in January 2014 that I wanted to run a Half Marathon and in March 2014 signed up for my first one with the goal of finishing in under 2 hours. On May 31, 2014 I completed my first one in 1:58…from there I was hooked. I’ve since cut over 14 minutes off my time and because I’m competitive with myself, I continue to improve. It’s my outlet, my form of therapy and the me time I need 3-4x/week. About 18 months ago, I signed up with Run Coach and credit the addition of speed workouts created by Coach Tom & his team + consistent strength training + significantly slowing down my recovery & long runs for getting faster as I get older.

Question 2: How do you manage to wake up so early? / Why do you choose to workout in the AM?

Uhmmm…I just do. I’m a morning person. I thrive in the early morning hours and am totally cool with being asleep before 10pm. I like starting my day off with some uninterrupted me time and I believe it helps me make consistent healthy choices throughout my day. I feel more energized and focused when I workout in the morning. It’s a habit and just a part of my routine at this point. I set my workout clothes out the night before and prep my preworkout/BCAAs to save time, and I don’t snooze my alarm.

Question 3: What Preworkout, Supplements, etc. do you take?

I’ve been using Alani Nu’s Preworkout for about 2 years now and highly recommend it. My favorite flavors are the Aloha Pineapple & Hawaiian Shaved Ice. It does give a bit of a tingly sensation, so if that’s not your vibe then their Stim-Free option is awesome too! I do a scoop of preworkout + 1 scoop of BCAAs about 30 minutes prior to working out. Otherwise I workout fasted. I also do all runs under 10 miles fasted. I do not take any other supplements, other than the occasional scoop of protein powder (loving Nutrex from local shop, Rexius Nutrition).

Questions 4: Favorite workout clothes, shoes?

This is easy…favorite running shoes: On. I prefer the Cloudflow style. *As always, I suggest going to a specialty running store to get your feet assessed before deciding on the best running shoe for your foot. Favorite lifting/gym shoe: Nike Metcons. Running shorts: Outdoor Voices Relay Shorts. Running leggings: Fast & Free 25″ from lululemon. Sports bras: Little Movements — legit all of theirs have worked great for my small chest.

Question 5: Best tips for beginners?

Don’t compare your starting point to someone else’s. Seems simple, but it’s not. It’s so easy to look at someone on social media and get discouraged. The thing to remember: we all had to start somewhere. You have no idea how long someone as been following their routine, how grueling it’s been to stay the course or how much they may have struggled or sacrificed to get to where they are currently. My biggest tip? Just start. Second? Find what YOU love and commit to that. Some are runners, some are into pilates, others enjoy spin classes (not me), while others enjoy Crossfit. Try a bunch of things, decide what works best for you and your goals.
